86-year-old Shirley has lived no ordinary life.
As a young girl, she grew up in a loving family, but with a very strict father. She was a fun-loving girl with lots of dreams and ambitions for the future.
However, there was an experience that made her change from the happy girl she was to a shy and reserved one, who didn’t enjoy being close to others anymore.
At the age of 14, Shirley was sexually abused, and this totally felt like a nightmare. This experience was catalytic for her. It completely changed her life.
“[I turned into] a quiet person, who just stood in the background. I didn’t think I was pretty; I thought I was used, merchandised. I didn’t think I’d ever find a man to love me because of that, and so it changed my personality,” she said.
But, only four years later, she met her future husband who made her feel pretty again.
At the time she had been working as a secretary, and he was an electrician, and they soon fell in love.
But things weren’t easy for them. Shirley’s father didn’t approve of their relationship, and they had to elope to Indiana.
Returning home, her father disowned her, leaving her disappointed one more time in her life.
However, even her strict father was convinced that Shirley had made the right decision to marry her husband when he saw his first grandchild.
Shirley and her husband had three children together, and they lived a happy life teaching 4- to 6-graders in church for many years.
When her husband passed away in 2017, Shirley’s heart sank. She and her two children- one of her children died from cancer in 2010- came even closer after this loss.
And, today, she’s a sweet lady, who might be in her mid-80s, but she feels 30, as she admits.
Before the makeover, she explained that she wanted to do something for herself. She desperately needed a change.
“I’d like to go home looking pretty,” she told the MAKEOVERGUY team. “You can be a pretty woman, a classy woman, a put-together woman, when you’re 86.”
As she explained, since she was abused, she has been able to relate to all these women who suffer from any kind of abuse, and what she has been trying to do all these years is comfort them and make them feel confident again.
This time, she wanted to do something for herself. She wanted to feel beautiful again. And she went straight to the right person.
Once the makeover is done, Shirley looks like a completely different person. She looks 30 years younger and so full of life!
Her hair is not dull anymore, but blonde and stylish. Her face looks fresh and flawless, while her new clothes add to her elegant look.
