Petroleum jelly was discovered in the 1860s and when it was first sold it was branded as Vaseline.
Of course, that brand has been around a while now, so we tend to just use the two interchangeably. And because it’s so old, people have found plenty of ways to use it.
Here are 10 clever ways that you can get more use from petroleum jelly (no matter what brand you use).
Some of these uses may surprise you!
1. Stop squeaks
If you’re tired of door hinges that squeak, Vaseline can help. Apply some to the hinges. Open and close the door a few times to spread it into the mechanism, and the noise should stop.
2. Firestarter
This one is great for getting a grill going. Cover a cotton ball in Vaseline and ignite it. It will stay lit for long enough to get everything else going.
3. Soothe razor bumps
If your skin doesn’t respond well to shaving, there’s a solution for that. Apply some Vaseline, and it will help to soothe and calm the stubble.
4. Help your pet’s paws
If your pet gets cracked or painful paws, Vaseline can help. Clean their paws gently and then apply a protective layer of the petroleum jelly.
5. Prevent scarring
Apply Vaseline to damaged skin to prevent potential scarring. Keeping the skin moisturized and protected during the healing process is vital for the formation of new skin.
6. Make perfume last longer
If you have a favorite scent that never seems to make it through the day, Vaseline may be the solution. Apply Vaseline to your skin first and then spray on your favorite scent. The smell will last twice as long.
7. Seal in lip color
Apply a layer of Vaseline over lipstick. It will help it to last longer while emphasizing the color.
8. Simple makeup remover
If you’re out of makeup remover, don’t fret. Add a little Vaseline to a cotton pad and use it the same way. Your makeup will come right off.
9. Protect your baby’s eyes
If you’re worried about getting shampoo in your baby’s eyes, this trick might help. Apply Vaseline to their eyebrows before washing their hair.
10. Remove paint from skin
If you’ve been painting all day and some is still on your skin, don’t waste time trying to pick at it. Apply Vaseline, wait a few minutes, and then rub the paint right off.
