No one can deny that nowhere does Halloween like America. But Mexico has its own scary holiday, with decorations that rival a US Halloween.
Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead, are like two sides of the same coin. Both events mean that those who celebrate it go all out when it comes to decorations and celebrations.
But while in America, people dress up as whatever they like and decorate with all sorts of imagery, Mexico has a different approach. The costumes and decorations are mostly based on skeletons.
And perhaps the most impressive Day of the Dead decorations of all time appeared this year in Mexico City.
Two gigantic skeletons appeared to be literally dragging themselves out of the ground in the Tlahuac Municipality. These decorations were placed right in the middle of the roads and must have given many drivers a fright!
Both of these skeletons were 11 feet wide and seven feet tall, meaning that they definitely turned many heads!
The decorations are incredibly impressive just to look at, but the work that’s gone into them is nothing short of amazing.
An art collective called Jaen Cartoneria is responsible for these two amazing ghoulish creations. The specific artist who first conceived these works was Raymundo Medina Jaen.
The art collective spent one whole year creating all of the pieces that comprise the skeletons. It took two days to put all of the pieces together. The primary material that was used to make them was cardboard.
It looks like the artists behind the decorations had found appropriately sized potholes in the area to place the skeletons, but this is all a clever illusion.
Instead, the roads are perfectly smooth but rubble has been placed around the skeletons, making the ground look like potholes.
The artists behind these skeletons have been creating similar Day of the Dead public artworks for the last eight years.
Various people in their community must look forward to spotting them at this time every single year.
But this year, the decorations have made an impact like never before.
People across the world have admired them. Photos of the works on social media have gained millions upon millions of views, bringing The Day of the Dead to whole new audiences.
The artists must be so happy that their works have received this level of admiration. Their original purpose for creating Day of the Dead artworks was to teach children about Mexican cultural heritage.
The skeletons drew record crowds of people throughout this year’s Day of the Dead celebrations. But sadly, once it was over, the skeletons were taken apart. It’s a shame, but it would have been impractical to have two giant skeletons sticking out of the road all year long!
Clearly, the artists have achieved something amazing here. The only downside is that the pressure is now really make something bigger and better next year. Next time, the entire world will be looking out for them!
